Guatemala congratulates Duque on his Colombia presidential election victory

Guatemala City, Jun 17 (efe-epa).- Guatemala on Sunday congratulated Ivan Duque for his victory in the Colombian presidential election and reiterated its desire to continue with the common agenda between both countries.

The Guatemalan foreign ministry expressed in a statement its "most sincere congratulations to Duque for his triumph on Sunday in the second round of elections, that took place in a democratic manner" and wished his administration success.

It also welcomed the "excellent bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite the two nations" and reiterated its willingness to "continue with the existing agenda of bilateral, multilateral and regional issues for mutual benefit."

The Guatemalan president, Jimmy Morales, congratulated Duque on social media with a brief message: "On behalf of the people of Guatemala, I congratulate the Colombian people for their exemplary democratic expression and Ivan Duque for the triumph gained in the election."

A lawyer by profession, Ivan Duque, candidate of the Uribe Democratic Center party, was elected Sunday as president of Colombia for the 2018-2022 term with a promise of strict measures against all forms of illegality and to "modify" aspects of the peace agreement with the FARC.

Duque, 41, clinched the presidency with more than 10.3 million votes - 53.98 percent, according to data from the National Registry, with 99.92 percent of the vote counted.
