Sucua, Ecuador, Mar 10 (efe-epa).- Brazilian Erica Rocha de Sena, Ecuadorians Magaly Bonilla and Andres Chocho and Colombian James Rendon won gold medals Saturday at the South American Race Walking Championships, held in this southeastern city.

De Sena won the women's 20-kilometer race, clocking in at 1 hour, 30 minutes and 22 seconds, beating out Ecuadorian Paola Perez by 15 seconds and Peruvian Kimberly Garcia by 2 minutes and 11 seconds.

Although De Sena led from start to finish, she said she did not feel well during the race and had to "pick up the pace" to edge out a "very strong" opponent in Perez.

All three women qualified for the World Race Walking Team Championships, which will be held in Taicang, China, from May 5-6.

Bonilla came in first in the women's 50-km race with a time of 4:19:36, setting a new South American record and besting fellow Ecuadorian Johana Ordoñez (4:28:58) and Brazilian Nair Da Rosa (4:38:48), who had set the previous mark at the 2017 Pan American Race Walking Cup in Lima.

Rendon won the men's 50-km race by clocking in at 4:03:42, while Ecuador won silver and bronze with David Velasquez (4:07:47) and Darwin Leon (4:13:12).

Brazilian Jose Bagio was ahead for much of the race but was forced to withdraw because of knee tendonitis, saying he started feeling pain behind his knee at around the 28-km mark.

Ecuador earned all three podium spots in the men's 20-km race, with Chocho winning gold with a time of 1:22:51 and Jose Mauricio Arteaga (1:23:13) and Daniel Pintado (1:24:16) taking silver and bronze, respectively.
