Trump pardons Thanksgiving turkeys, but not the press

Washington, Nov 26 (efe-epa).- President Donald Trump on Tuesday observed the tradition - begun in 1989 by the late President George H.W. Bush - of pardoning a pair of turkeys at the White House for Thanksgiving in a brief ceremony at which he took advantage of the public forum to unload on the Democrats, especially against Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee that is pursuing an impeachment investigation against him.

During the ceremony to pardon Bread and Butter, this year's two specially selected turkeys, the president joked that both of the birds were specially bred to "remain calm under any circumstance."

"That's good, because they've already received subpoenas to appear in Adam Schiff's basement," Trump said, going on to joke that the "Democrats are accusing me of being too soft on turkey."

This latter remark, evidently, was a reference to his pulling most US troops out of Syria to clear the way for Turkey to invade the northern part of that country to quash resistance from the Kurds, long-standing US allies in the fight against the Islamic State, a move for which Trump has been widely criticized.

The president singled out Schiff, who has been one of the most prominent Democratic lawmakers in the congressional investigation to determine whether there is sufficient reason to subject Trump to a Senate impeachment trial that could result in his being removed from office.

The president was accompanied at the pardoning ceremony by first lady Melania Trump.

The president also took advantage of his brief appearance in public and before the media to boast that under his administration "our country is doing very well," citing stock market gains and successes by the US military.

He said that this military success was reflected in the recent Special Forces operation in Syria against the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a raid that resulted in his death.

The Thanksgiving holiday was proclaimed by President George Washington, who governed from 1789-1797, with the aim of celebrating the birth of the nation and its prosperity.

It has been celebrated every third Thursday in November since 1941, as per a decision by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Many Americans traditionally eat turkey on Thanksgiving in memory of the Pilgrim colonists in Massachusetts, who hunted the wild birds for food.

The presentation of Thanksgiving turkeys at the White House dates back to the 1920s, although for many years that did not save the birds from being eaten in the presidential residence by guests invited to dine with the president on the holiday.

That situation was changed by George H.W. Bush, who instituted the presidential tradition of publicly pardoning at least one bird.
