Dream museum for Star Wars fans opens in Mexico City

Mexico City, Oct 23 (efe-epa).- The Museo Estelar (Star Museum), the largest Star Wars exhibition in Latin America, opened its doors on Wednesday in this capital so that Mexican fans of the space saga can admire - free of charge - the more than 4,000 items displayed there.

Ewoks, droids, Imperial storm trooper action figures of all sizes, limited-edition light sabers, assorted spaceships, masks and helmets are just some of the items that can be viewed in their glass cases in the two-floor museum.

"This museum is a dream come true. It's an exhibition of collectibles, unique pieces and limited editions with which many of us can recreate our childhoods. It's (been assembled) by fans for fans. We hope to take it to other galaxies," said museum director Cesar Cruz during the inauguration of the extensive exhibit.

Cruz himself is a big fan of the George Lucas space opera and if he would have had the chance to visit the museum when he was a young Star Wars fan he said he wouldn't have been able to believe it.

"It would have been a dream come true," Cruz told EFE.

His favorite items in the collection are the "vintage" pieces, since over the more than 40 years that the movie franchise has been expanding many of the fictional tech and other items in the films, as well as the myriad of toys and other Star Wars products, have evolved.

The collection, which was made available by Jose Kalach, has been under assembly for more than 40 years and at present its economic value is virtually priceless.

"The important thing is the sentimental value," said Cruz.

The Museo Estelar joins a network of more than 200 museums in Mexico City, making the capital the city with the second largest number of such cultural institutions, after London.

Mexican Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco Marques, who was present for the museum opening, said that the Museo Estelar will be included on the country's list of museums and that it is "a great contribution for capital residents."

The museum will be open to the public - with free admission, although one must reserve tickets via the Internet - from Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
