"Game of Thrones" gets record 32 Emmy nominations

Los Angeles, Jul 16 (epa-efe).- "Game of Thrones" on Tuesday racked up a record 32 Emmy Award nominations, thus becoming the series that has received the most nominations in history for a single season and reaching 161 total nominations during its television run.

Los Angeles, Jul 16 (epa-efe).- "Game of Thrones" on Tuesday racked up a record 32 Emmy Award nominations, thus becoming the series that has received the most nominations in history for a single season and reaching 161 total nominations during its television run.

Among the 32 nominations is one for best dramatic series, and the HBO epic and highly popular series is the great favorite at this year's Emmys, the last in which the show that has become a social phenomenon will participate after its eighth season.

After "Game of Thrones," Amazon Prime's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" received 20 nominations, including one for best comedy series, and HBO's "Chernobyl" miniseries obtained 19, one of them for best limited series.

"Saturday Night Live" received 18 nominations, the comedy "Barry" 17, the drama "Fosse/Verdon" 17 and the miniseries "When They See Us" 16, rounding out the list of favorites for the coveted awards bestowed by the US Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which will hold its 71st gala awards ceremony on Sept. 22 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Besides setting a record for the most nominations for "Games of Thrones," this year's Emmy Awards have also gathered the largest number of nominees for one of its awards for the first time since 2011.

Competing with "Game of Thrones" for the best dramatic series award will be "Killing Eve," "Better Call Saul," "Bodyguard," "Ozark," "Pose," "Succession" and "This is Us."

Meanwhile, "Veep" - the satire about White House intrigues that has taken the best comedy award three consecutive times - and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" will go head to head for the best comedy award, a category in which "Barry," "Fleabag," "Russian Doll," "The Good Place" and "Schitt's Creek" have also been nominated.

A surprise for many viewers is the absence of Julia Roberts among the actresses nominated for lead actress in a drama for her role in "Homecoming," the role for which she won a Golden Globe early this year.

Meanwhile, Robin Wright does figure among the nominees for best dramatic actress for her role in "House of Cards," despite the fact that the Academy probably wants to forget about the series after the sexual abuse scandal involving its lead actor, Kevin Spacey.

Emilia Clarke, Mandy Moore, Jodie Comer, Laura Linney, Sandra Oh and Viola Davis will also be competing for best dramatic actress.

Competing for best lead actor in a drama are: Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown, Kit Harington, Bob Odenkirk, Billy Porter and Milo Ventimiglia.

Vying for best actress in a comedy will be Christina Applegate, Rachel Brosnahan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natasha Lyonne, Catherine O'Hara and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, while Michael Douglas, Eugene Levy, Don Cheadle, Anthony Anderson, Ted Danson and Bill Hader have been nominated for the best actor in a comedy award.

Among Latino actors, Benicio del Toro was nominated for lead actor in limited series or movie for his role in "Escape at Dannemora," his first Emmy nomination, and Jharrel Jerome was nominated for his role in "When They See Us."

"It's great to see such an array of new talent honored for their excellent work," said US Television Academy president Frank Scherma.

"While our voting membership recognized several returning, acclaimed programs, there are many Emmy categories that feature fresh shows and emerging talents, celebrating the opportunity and continued creative growth offered by television," he added.
