Venezuela, Peru play to scoreless draw in Copa America

Porto Alegre, Brazil, Jun 15 (efe-epa).- Venezuela and Peru played to a 0-0 draw here Saturday afternoon in their opening match at the Copa America, a Group A contest that saw the tournament's first expulsion but little in the way of offensive flair.

The result leaves the two teams presently in a tie for second place in their group behind host Brazil, who routed Bolivia 3-0 in their opening game on Friday night.

The man of the match at Arena do Gremio stadium in this southern city was 21-year-old Venezuelan goalkeeper Wuilker Fariñez, who made numerous remarkable saves to keep Peru off the scoreboard.

Peru was the more aggressive side overall and looked determine to show that their World Cup finals appearance last year was no fluke, but they had two apparent goals disallowed for offside and also botched scoring chances with several bad passes.

The game could have taken on a much different complexion if a goal by Peruvian forward Christofer Gonzalez in the sixth minute had been allowed to stand, but midfielder Renato Tapia was found to be offside when the play was reviewed by the VAR system.

Both goalkeepers then dominated the remainder of the first half, with Peruvian net minder Pedro Gallese making a save on a point-blank blast off the foot of Salomon Rondon in a one-on-one opportunity and Fariñez deflecting a potent free kick by Paolo Guerrero for a corner kick just before the intermission.

The intensity of the match picked up after the break as both teams were aware that a victory would be key to assuring a berth in the knockout stage of this South American championship.

Peru nearly opened the scoring a second time at the 63-minute mark on an apparent goal by forward Jefferson Farfan, but the VAR system determined that second-half substitute Edison Flores was offside on the play.

The action heated up even more down the stretch but neither side had the precision, magic or luck necessary to get the ball in the back of the net.

The Peruvians gained the numerical advantage when Venezuelan defender Luis del Pino Mago was sent off for a second yellow card, but they were unable to capitalize.

Their best chance came when they fired five consecutive shots toward the Venezuelan goal with 12 minutes remaining but could not get anything past Fariñez, who made another save of a shot by Flores in the dying minutes.

- Line-ups:

0 - Venezuela: Wuilker Fariñez; Roberto Rosales, Jhon Chancellor, Mikel Villanueva, Luis del Pino Mago; Jefferson Savarino (m.70, Darwin Machis), Tomas Rincon, Yangel Herrera, Junior Moreno (m.80, Ronald Hernandez), Jhon Murillo (m.86, Yeferson Soteldo); and Salomon Rondon.

Head coach: Rafael Dudamel.

0 - Peru: Pedro Gallese; Luis Advincula, Carlos Zambrano, Luis Abram, Miguel Trauco; Jefferson Farfan, Renato Tapia, Yoshimar Yotun (m.68, Andy Polo), Christian Cueva (m.46, Edison Flores); Christofer Gonzales (m.90, Andre Carrillo) and Paolo Guerrero.

Head coach: Ricardo Gareca.

Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan showed one yellow card apiece to Peru's Tapia (m.26) and Carrillo (m.90+5) and Venezuela's Herrera (m.82). He sent off Venezuela's Del Pino Mago (m.75) for a second yellow card.

The match was a Group A Copa America contest played at Arena do Gremio stadium in Porto Alegre before 13,000 spectators.
