Google completes undersea cable linking Chile to California

Valparaiso, Chile, Apr 23 (efe-epa).- The last link of Google's Curie undersea cable, connecting California to Chile, was installed Tuesday in this Pacific port city.

Valparaiso, Chile, Apr 23 (efe-epa).- The last link of Google's Curie undersea cable, connecting California to Chile, was installed Tuesday in this Pacific port city.

The link, named for scientist Marie Curie, spans 10,000km (6,213mi) from Los Angeles to Las Torpederas beach in Valparaiso and includes a spur to allow a future extension to Panama.

The 13th underwater fiber-optic connection built by Google worldwide is the first new cable for Chile in nearly two decades.

Google announced the project in early 2018 as part of a push for global connectivity.

Divers and other technicians from Google and sub-contractor TE SubCom finalized the installation on Tuesday.

The final stretch of the cable arrived aboard a SubCom vessel.

Google has invested more than $47 billion in the last years to create a cloud that is "smart," more secure and capable of handling large volumes of data, the head of the company's cable division, Jayne Stowell, said in a statement.

Chile's minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt, said that completion of the Curie was a milestone in the country's technological development.

"The setting in place of this great infrastructure will bring advantages and opportunities to millions of Internet users," she said.

Chile is home to the only one of Google's 15 data centers to be located in Latin America.

Last September, the Internet giant announced an investment of roughly $140 million to expand the complex in the Santiago suburb of Quilicura, which stores and transmits information generated by applications like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Waze and Uber.

The expansion came six years after Google sank $150 million into the creation of the Chilean hub, which runs on renewable energy coming from the El Romero solar plant, located in northern Chile's Atacama Desert.

Google said the addition would triple the data center's capacity and that some 1,000 people would be hired for the construction.

"With this investment, we are preparing for the future. We seek to improve the data center with this development, because our users will demand more and more information," Edgardo Frias, country manager of Google Chile, told EFE then.
