Democratic presidential candidate calls for impeachment trial against Trump

Washington DC, Apr 19 (efe-epa).- Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren on Friday urged the House of Representatives to initiate the impeachment process against US President Donald Trump for the "severity" of the revelations included in the Mueller report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"The severity of this misconduct demands that elected officials in both parties set aside political considerations and do their constitutional duty. That means the House should initiate impeachment proceedings against the President of the United States," the senator wrote on her Twitter account.

Warren highlighted the revelations of the report by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, which were released Thursday, including several episodes of Trump to obstruct the investigation into the possible conspiracy with Russia during the 2016 elections.

The senator said Mueller's document details Russia's attempts to help get Trump elected as president and how the current president "welcomed that help" and once elected "obstructed the investigation."

"To ignore a President's repeated efforts to obstruct an investigation into his own disloyal behavior would inflict great and lasting damage on this country, and it would suggest that both the current and future Presidents would be free to abuse their power in similar ways," she added.

The Democrats have a majority in the House of Representatives, where Warren asks the impeachment process should begin, but the speaker of the House, and fellow Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, has distanced herself from the consequences of this measure and its effects on the 2020 presidential election.

Other Democratic nominees, such as former Texas state Congressman Beto O'Rourke, have limited themselves to demanding that Congress sees the unredacted version of Mueller's report and hear from Mueller himself.

Mueller explains in his report the development of his investigations into the alleged connection between the Trump electoral team and Russia in the campaign for the 2016 presidential elections and the alleged obstruction of justice by the president.

However, the special prosecutor concludes that there was "insufficient evidence to support criminal charges" related to the "numerous contacts between individuals linked to the Russian government" and Trump's campaign, but does not come to a conclusion as to whether Mr. Trump obstructed justice.

Warren, in a series of Twitter statements, quotes the Mueller report that "Congress has authority to prohibit a President's corrupt use of his authority in order to protect the integrity of the administration of justice," and makes the conclusion that "the correct process for exercising that authority is impeachment."
