Federer and Nadal into quarterfinals, Muguruza eliminated in Indian Wells

Los Angeles, USA, Mar 13 (efe-epa).- Swiss Roger Federer, a five times Indian Wells champion, qualified Wednesday for the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells tournament, the first Masters 1000 of the season, by defeating British Kyle Edmund 6-1 and 6-4 in 64 minutes.

Federer, 37, will face the Polish Hubert Hurkacz on Friday, the first time that they will play each other. Hurkacz has just beaten Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-6(3), 2-6 and 6-3.

Federer, current world number four, disarmed his opponent from the beginning and took the first five games. The British improved in the second set, but in the fifth game could not avoid a key break that led to victory for the Swiss and his advance, for the thirteenth time in his career, to the quarterfinals of the California desert classic tournament.

Earlier Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza was eliminated in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells losing 6-0 and 6-1 in 53 minutes against the young Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who is 18-years-old.

Andreescu will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Czech Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinals of the tournament.

The Spanish-Venezuelan never got into the game and was dominated entirely by her rival who was full of confidence and won the first nine games of the match.

The first set, an exhibition of skills, was taken by the Canadian in just 24 minutes and not even the advice given by Muguruza's coach Sam Sumyk, who encouraged her to find different resources and play with more energy, showed any effect.

Andreescu thus becomes the third player to reach the semi-finals of the tournament after arriving with an invitation from the WTA, while her opponent has yet to reach a semifinal of a premier mandatory tournament since the Beijing Open in 2015.

With this result, the Canadian, who started the year in 152nd place of the WTA ranking, is guaranteed to break into the top 50 ranks from next week.

So far this year she has won 26 times, including the title in Newport Beach and a semifinal in Acapulco, and lost three.

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, current world No. 2, got his ticket to the quarterfinals after beating Serbian Filip Krajinovic 6-3 and 6-4 in one hour and 27 minutes.

His rival in the quarterfinals will be Russian Karen Khachanov who beat American John Isner 6-4 and 7-6 on Wednesday.
