Mexico City, Jan 11 (efe-epa).- Argentine midfielder Victor Malcorra says Pumas UNAM have what it takes to compete in the Mexican league's Clausura 2019 championship and that it will be no surprise if they contend for the title.

Pumas have gotten off to a disappointing start in that competition, playing to a 0-0 draw at home against Veracruz last Sunday in Matchday 1 action.

"We don't need to surprise anyone. We've got different options. We have a good line-up. The guys from the youth team are good. We have what we need to compete and do as well as last tournament (the Apertura 2018) or even better," the 31-year-old said Thursday.

Pumas did not make any outside signings in the brief interim between the two tournaments of the 2018-2019 season, but Malcorra - a former player with Argentine clubs Union de Santa Fe and Aldosivi - downplayed the lack of changes and said "reinforcements don't guarantee anything."

He also said the Mexico City club, who were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Apertura 2018 by Club America in early December, can bounce back from their poor result in Matchday 1.

"There's no need to be alarmed; it was the first match. We deserved to win but couldn't score. We've watched the videos so we can correct our mistakes, and little by little we'll regain the rhythm we had at the end of the last tournament," Malcorra said.

Pumas will visit Necaxa in Matchday 2 action on Saturday night.
