Queretaro, Mexico, Oct 19 (EFE).- League-leading Cruz Azul will take on eighth-place Queretaro in Matchday 13 action on Saturday with high hopes of coming away with three points and remaining atop the Mexican-league's Apertura standings.

The Mexico City club (26 points) comes into the contest at Corregidora Stadium with the stingiest defense in the Apertura championship, having allowed just nine goals through 12 matches.

It will likely look to leverage that strength to kick-start its attack against Queretaro (16 points), which is barely clinging to a spot in the eight-team playoff zone with five matches remaining and also is badly in need of a victory.

Cruz Azul has lost its last two road games but will try to buck that trend tomorrow, having worked over the international break with that goal in mind.

Club America and last season's Clausura champions, Santos Laguna, are in second and third place, respectively, and both can leapfrog Cruz Azul if they win and the Cementeros stumble against Queretaro.

America (24 points) will host 10th-place Tijuana on Saturday at Azteca Stadium, where it will look to use the high-altitude conditions in Mexico City - 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level - to its advantage.

The visiting Xolos, meanwhile, could jump into the eight-team playoff zone with an upset win.

Santos (24 points) will visit Pachuca in a highly anticipated match Saturday pitting two playoff contenders, although the Tuzos are currently in 11th place and in need of getting back on track after a 2-1 loss in their previous Apertura contest against Toluca.

In its previous home match, Pachuca defeated Cruz Azul 3-1 to hand the Cementeros their second loss of the season.

Also Saturday, sixth-place Monterrey will host fifth-place Toluca and 15th-place Necaxa will host 14th-place Leon.

Monterrey has tallied the most points in Mexican soccer over the last two years yet has come up short in key moments and failed to win any championships.

Matchday 13 will kick off Friday with a contest in which last-place Atlas will receive 17th-place Veracruz.

Three Apertura games are on tap for Sunday: Lobos BUAP-Guadalajara, Pumas UNAM-Tigres UANL and Morelia-Puebla.
