Spain development minister touts country's infrastructure prowess

Lima, Oct 15 (efe-epa).- Spain's development minister on Monday kicked off his visit to Peru with a meeting with Peruvian senior officials, in which he praised his country's level of investment in the South American nation's infrastructure.

Lima, Oct 15 (efe-epa).- Spain's development minister on Monday kicked off his visit to Peru with a meeting with Peruvian senior officials, in which he praised his country's level of investment in the South American nation's infrastructure.

Jose Luis Abalos pointed to the international projection of Spanish companies during a meeting with Premier Cesar Villanueva, Economy Minister Carlos Oliva and Deputy Transport Minister Carlos Estremadoyro.

Abalos also said that Spanish companies' interest in Peru is "long-lasting and stable," citing Spanish participation in various infrastructure projects, such as Line 2 of Lima's subway system, which is being built by a consortium led by Spain's ACS y FCC.

He also highlighted that the experience that Spanish companies bring to the table in terms of infrastructure includes Spain's largest thoroughfare network, as well as the world's fourth railroad system and the second high-speed rail.

Spanish companies have received as much as 10.39 billion euros ($12 billion) in concessions to develop a variety of public works over the past four years, earning the European country a name as Peru's leading investor, with 18 percent of the total foreign direct investment.

Abalos will later join Spanish businessmen at Lima's Spanish Embassy, where he will urge the business owners to continue taking part in Peru's investment projects, which are estimated at some 50 billion euros for the 2016-2025 period.

The minister will also visit the Andres Avelino Caceres sports center, currently under construction by Spain's Sacyr and Uruguay's Saceem, ahead of the 2019 PanAmerican Games in Lima.
