Mexico City, Oct 12 (EFE).- Tropical Storm Sergio made landfall in the state of Baja California Sur and could bring heavy rains to several regions of northern Mexico, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) said Friday.

The SMN said in its 12:15 GMT bulletin that the storm was located 75km (47mi) east of Punta Abreojos, Baja California Sur, moving westward at 39km/h (24kph).

Sergio has maximum sustained winds of 70km/h (43mph), with gusts of up to 85km/h (53mph).

The SMN issued a tropical storm warning for the west coast of Baja California Sur, from Punta Eugenia to Cabot San Lazar, and for the east coast, from Bahia San Juan Bautista to Mileage.

Sergio is expected to exit the peninsula and pass over the Gulf of California before making a second landfall Friday afternoon on the coast of Sonora, between the towns of Kino Bay and Guayas.

The government of Baja California Sur ordered schools closed on Friday and activated 27 shelters for people living in vulnerable areas.

Sergio was a Category 4 hurricane on Oct. 3, but began to weaken as it moved closer to land.
