Marathon grabs top spot in Honduran league

    Tegucigalpa, Oct 11 (EFE).- Marathon played to a 1-1 draw with Motagua, a result that was good enough to move it into first place in the Honduran league.

    Marathon's performance on Wednesday allowed it to edge Olimpia for first place on goal differential.

    Marathon got on the scoreboard first, Colombian Justin Arboleda nailed a goal 18 minutes into the match.

    Motagua tied the score in the 36th minute, thanks to Kevin Lopez, who scored on a header off a pass from Omar Elvir.

    The match, featuring two big rivals in Honduran soccer, ended without any more scoring.

    Marathon, managed by Argentine Hector Vargas, controlled the match during the first 20 minutes, but Motagua picked up the pace after the first goal and fought to tie the score.

    In the final minutes of the second half, Motagua, managed by Argentine-Honduran Diego Vazquez, almost won.

    Marathon, which hosted the match at Yankel Rosenthal Stadium in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, is in first place, with 23 points, on goal differential over Olympia, which also has 23 points.

    Motagua is in fourth place, with 21 points, just behind Real España, which is in third place on goal differential.

    The four clubs holding the top spots in the tournament are considered the best teams in Honduras.

    The 14th round of the championship tournament will be played on Sunday, with Marathon taking on Real España; Olimpia playing Motagua; Juticalpa clashing with Real de Minas; Platense playing Honduras Progreso; and Vida taking on Universidad Pedagogica.
