Montevideo, Sep 17 (efe-epa).- Uruguay achieved an agonizing 63-60 victory over Mexico Monday sealing its position in the race for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup China 2019.

Uruguay, second in Group A with 10 points, had to use all their skills to beat the Mexicans in Palacio Peñarol in Montevideo.

Uruguay's Esteban Batista, 35-year-old center, emerged as a key figure of the winning team and for the visitors Gustavo Ayon, also a center, was the best player.

Batista was the first to score in the match leaving the scoreboard 2-0 in favor of Uruguay.

After the first half began, the game became an uphill battle for Uruguay which ended 10 points below thanks to good defense work by Mexico and its success in achieving triples.

In the second half, Uruguay seemed to make a comeback and narrowed down the advantage of Mexico, which, however, continued to dominate the match.

Uruguay's 19-year-old point guard, Joaquin Rodriguez, made a triple and revived the team, amid shouts of "Soy celeste" ('I am heavenly' in a reference to the team's blue jerseys) at the Peñarol Palace.

Uruguay managed to close the penultimate quarter five points behind on the scoreboard, with a great recovery by Bruno Fitipaldo through a point and a double.

Aware of the minutes ticking by and disadvantage in the marker, the Uruguayans gave it their all in the last half, finally turning the tables with an eventual 63-60 victory.
