Authorities investigate quadruple murder in Mexico City's Garibaldi square

    15 de septiembre de 2018

Mexico City, Sep 15 (efe-epa).- Mexico City authorities are investigating a shooting in Garibaldi square - a major tourist attraction in the capital - that left four people dead and nine others injured, the district attorney's office said in a statement.

The shooting took place Friday night in front of a restaurant lining the square, which is a popular spot for mariachi bands, who offer to play songs for visitors.

Three men and a woman were killed, while a foreigner is among those who were injured, the attorney's office said.

According to local media outlets, the attackers, who were dressed as mariachi musicians, arrived at the square on motorcycles, then shot the people who were outside the restaurant and fled.

The nine injured people were taken to several hospitals to receive medical attention, the attorney's office said.

Experts from the Investigative Police soon arrived on the scene to collect evidence to find those responsible and "elucidate the crime," the statement from the district attorney's office says.

The police have also begun to request access to security camera footage in Garibaldi square to obtain more information.

The recent rise in violence in Mexico City has been linked to clashes between several local criminal gangs, including Union de Tepito, Fuerza Anti Union, and the Tlahuac Cartel, which is allied with larger criminal groups operating in other parts of the country.

According to figures from Semaforo Delictivo, an organization that measures different categories of crime in Mexico, the number of homicides in Mexico City increased 12 percent in the first half of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017.
