Washington, Sep 14 (efe-epa).- Hurricane Florence, expected to make landfall within the next few hours, weakened to a category 1 storm on Friday while it was around 70 kilometers from the United States coastline, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour.

The National Hurricane Center of the US said in its latest bulletin at 12 am that Florence had dropped another category on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Florence had strengthened to a category 4 hurricane - out of a maximum scale of 5 - 48 hours ago with sustained winds of up to 200 kph.

At midnight, the eye of the storm was situated 70 kilometers south-southwest of Morehead city in North Carolina and 85 kilometers to the east of Wilmington, a city of more than 100,000 inhabitants.

Florence is advancing in the northeasterly direction at a speed of 9 kph, with sustained winds of up to 150 kph.

Despite dropping in strength, the hurricane, accompanied by rainstorm, the NHC warned, could pose a "life-threatening" risk to people.
