Massenet's "Werther" returns to Uruguay after 35 years

Montevideo, Sep 13 (EFE).- Jules Massenet's opera "Werther" returns to the Uruguayan stage on Thursday after an absence of 35 years.

Audiences can look forward to a "spectacular" performance by a distinguished international cast, conductor Martin Jorge told EFE.

"One of the characteristics it has is the spectacularity of the staging," the director of the Banda Sinfonica of Montevideo said.

"But it is not superficial, but rather a spectacularity with much depth, encompassing both the novel that originated the character and the operatic version," Jorge said.

The part of Werther is sung by US tenor Jonathan Tetelman, while Argentine mezzo-soprano Florencia Machado portrays Charlotte, the object of the young man's affections.

Based on Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther," the four-act opera is set in Germany during the 1780s and tells the story of a man who falls in love with a woman already promised to another.
