Mexico City, Aug 12 (efe-epa).- Liga MX's America steamrolled Monterrey to a 3-0 final score this weekend, climbing to second place in the 2018 Apertura championship, landing just below Pumas.

Colombia's Roger Martinez and Andres Ibarguen, as well as Paraguay's Bruno Valdez scored on Saturday for America, which has a record of 3-1 and nine points.

America got off to a good start at this capital's Azteca Stadium, with Martinez capitalizing on an oversight by Uruguay's Jonathan Urretavizcaya and netting the match's first goal.

Though Diego Alonso's Rayados struggled as Colombia's center back Stefan Medina was red-carded in the 30th minute, the squad kept at it, with Aviles Hurtado making a shot, but missing the goal.

After half time, America got closer to the victory at minute 50, when Valdez saved Argentine defender Jose Maria Basanta's free kick, scoring the side's second goal with a header and setting the scoreboard at 2-0.

America adopted a possession-based game marked by several good opportunities, which the team capitalized on at minute 85 when Ibarguen scored a penalty.

Pumas and America top the standings with nine points each, tied with Cruz Azul and Monterrey, who are third and fourth, respectively.

On Sunday, the fourth round of tournament play will conclude with the Pumas UNAM taking on Pachuca, Guadalajara battling Santos Laguna and Tijuana clashing with Cruz Azul.
