Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Beethoven, Kalinnikov

Montevideo, Jul 19 (efe-epa).- The Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday will perform a concert featuring pieces by Beethoven and, for the first time in Uruguay, a symphony by Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov.

The musicians will be under the baton of Argentine conductor Javier Logioia Orbe, with Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic as guest soloist, making her first appearance in the South American country.

The capital's Teatro Solis will be the scene of Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, known as "The Emperor," as well as Kalinnikov's Symphony No. 1.

"Both pieces are very difficult, " the conductor told EFE, adding that the Emperor concerto is a "very complex" composition for the soloist.

He also said that his decision of including Kalinnikov in the recital is due to the fact that the Russian's music has "never been performed in Uruguay."
