Spurs trade Leonard, Green to Raptors for DeRozan, Poeltl

Sports Desk, USA, Jul 18 (efe-epa).- The San Antonio Spurs have traded Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green with Toronto Raptors pair DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poetl, as well as a 2019 first round draft pick, the Texas club said Wednesday.

Kawhi Leonard's departure from Texas had long been expected, as the star missed the end of the regular season and San Antonio's short-lived postseason.

Leonard leaves San Antonio after seven illustrious seasons, during which he won the NBA championship and was voted NBA Finals MVP in 2014.

He was also voted defensive player of the year in 2015, and made the All-Star team two years running, before his final injury-plagued season.

"We hope that this will be a good situation for everybody involved", Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said on Wednesday. "Kawhi obviously worked very hard to become the player he is. Our staff worked very hard to get him there, and we wish him all the best".

Popovich welcomes DeMar DeRozan in Leonard's stead.

"I couldn't be happier", the Spurs coach said of the four-time All-Star.
