Masaya, Nicaragua, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- Two people died Friday in the Nicaraguan city of Masaya, according to a human rights organization, in clashes between protesters and security forces following a speech by the president.

The city has become the symbol of the popular uprising against President Daniel Ortega.

Heavy arms were used in the clashes that killed at least two people, the Nicaraguan Association for Human Rights (ANPDH) said.

The clashes were centered in the Principal Park of Masaya, the location of the indigenous district of Monimbo, still heavily barricaded and the last stronghold of protesters who have risen up against Ortega demanding his resignation.

Hours before the arrival of Ortega in Masaya, clashes broke out between protesters and riot police, although without the intervention of the hundreds of paramilitaries and parapolice that surrounded the city.

Ortega was speaking at an event to memorial the 'tactical retreat' in 1979 of the Sandinista guerillas who later ousted the then president Anastasio Somoza Debayle.

Since the anti-Ortega protests began on Apr. 18 at least 351 people have died in repression by security forces, according to ANPDH.
