Mexico's Lopez Obrador meets with US sec'y of state

    13 de julio de 2018

Mexico City, Jul 13 (EFE).- Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador greeted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo here Friday with a proposal for a new path forward in bilateral relations.

The meeting, which represented the first face to face conversation between US officials and the winner of Mexico's July 1 presidential election, was "frank, respectful and cordial," Mexico's Foreign Secretary-designate Marcelo Ebrard told a press conference.

"I think this was a first successful conversation. We are reasonably optimistic that Mexico will find understanding and a good relationship with the US in the next few years," he said following the encounter at Lopez Obrador's transition office in Mexico City.

Pompeo was accompanied by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser.

Ebrard said that the proposal delivered to the US delegation addressed the "four main dimensions of the US-Mexico relationship."

The first is trade and the ongoing talks between Canada, Mexico, and the United States on revising the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The second point is migration, particularly Lopez Obrador's plan to carry out development initiatives in marginalized areas, "so that nobody in Mexico will have to migrate because of poverty and insecurity."

Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador would also be included in the development plan.

Another important point is security cooperation with the US, an issue on which Ebrard said that a constructive dialogue could be established although Mexico would carry out important changes.

Ebrard said that Trump's planned border wall was not a topic brought up in the conservation with the US delegation, and that Lopez Obrador's transition team would provide more information on the proposal once the US president had received it.
