Uruguay marks 88th anniversary of 1st World Cup goal

Montevideo, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- The French ambassador in Uruguay commemorated Friday the 88th anniversary of the first goal in World Cup history, scored by France's Lucient Laurent against Mexico in a match in Montevideo.

Montevideo, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- The French ambassador in Uruguay commemorated Friday the 88th anniversary of the first goal in World Cup history, scored by France's Lucient Laurent against Mexico in a match in Montevideo.

To celebrate the goal, which was scored in the Pocitos Stadium before 4,000 fans on July 13, 1930, envoy Hugues Moret kicked a replica of the original ball used in the first World Cup.

"I didn't come here to score a goal, I came here to commemorate the first goal of the first World Cup, which was scored by a French player in 1930," Moret said.

The ambassador recalled that France is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first World Cup title and that he hoped to be able to celebrate France's second victory in two days.

"Evidently, I hope that France will win the final and bring home their second title," Moret said ahead of Sunday's 2018 World Cup final in Russia between Les Bleus and Croatia.

Mexican diplomat Jose Alvaro Dominguez, who also attended the event even though Mexico lost the first 1930 World Cup match 4-1, did not venture to predict a winner for the 2018 World Cup final.

Another person who attended the event was Eduardo di Mauro, the sculptor who created a monument on the former site of the stadium, which was leveled decades ago.

"The soccer field would now be in the middle of the city, although research and old photographs have confirmed that this is the site where the stadium was located," Di Mauro told EFE.
