    Kidnapped Mexican mayor returns unharmed

    13 de julio de 2018

Mexico City, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- The mayor of the northern Mexican town of Ciudad Mier reappeared unharmed after having been kidnapped by an armed group, authorities from the state of Tamaulipas said Friday.

Roberto Gonzalez Hinojosa arrived home in his own car and is "in good conditions," state security spokesman Luis Alberto Rodriguez told Radio Formula.

The spokesman said that the motives of the kidnapping are yet unknown and that the mayor would deliver a press conference in the next few hours.

The five kidnappers, who were travelling in two vehicles, abducted Gonzalez Hinojosa, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), as he was leaving Ciudad Mier city hall Thursday afternoon.

The kidnappers forced the mayor into one of the vehicles and took his car as well.

Gonzalez won re-election on July 1 and was preparing to celebrate his victory Thursday evening.

After his kidnapping, federal police, military units and the Tamaulipas Attorney General's Office launched an air and land search operation, and set up roadblocks to find the culprits.

Ciudad Mier has been the object of a turf war for several years among rival organized crime groups.
