Brazil's Vasco da Gama signs Argentine forward Rios to contract extension

    11 de julio de 2018

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 11 (efe-epa).- Argentine forward Andres Rios signed a contract extension on Wednesday with Brazil's Vasco da Gama that runs until the end of the current season, the Rio de Janeiro-based club's management said.

"I'm really happy about re-signing. Vasco is a big-time team, I adapted well to the club and I really like playing here," Rios said in a statement posted on Vasco da Gama's website.

The 29-year-old Buenos Aires native arrived in Brazil a year ago from Argentina's Defensa y Justicia and has made his mark in Rio, scoring 12 goals in 50 matches for Vasco.

Rios got his early professional training in the River Plate organization and later played briefly for Liga MX clubs America and Leones Negros before leaving Mexico to sign with Defensa y Justicia back home in Argentina.

The striker said he was commmitted to "helping Vasco fight for a top spot in the standings" for the Brazilian Championship so it can qualify for the 2019 Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club competition.

Vasco da Gama was eliminated in the group phase of this year's Copa Libertadores.

The Rio de Janeiro-based club remains alive in the Copa Sudamericana, South America's secondary club competition, and will take on Ecuador's Liga de Quito in the second phase of the tournament.

Vasco da Gama is also alive in the Copa de Brasil tournament, but it must rally after being beaten by Bahia 3-0 if it is to advance to the quarterfinals.
