Buenos Aires, Jun 22 (efe-epa).- Argentine police broke up a gang in the province of Buenos Aires that smuggled drugs in replica World Cup trophies, authorities said Friday.

Police officers from the district of La Matanza arrested six people and seized two luxury vehicles, two firearms and eight replica trophies each containing around 1.5 kgs (3.3 lbs) of drugs.

The police also seized 20 kgs of marijuana, 10 kgs of cocaine, 1,800 doses of "paco" (similar to crack) and 400,000 pesos ($14,720) in cash, the Ministry of Security of the province of Buenos Aires said in statement.

According to the ministry, the criminal organization sought to take advantage of the popularity of World Cup souvenirs to smuggle drugs without raising suspicion.

The security minister of the province, Cristian Ritondo, presented the results of the police operation that allowed authorities to break up the drug trafficking gang.

As a general tally, Ritondo said that 59,000 police operations against drug trafficking gangs had been carried out in the province since late 2015.
