Liga de Quito on track to win first stage of Ecuadorian league tournament

    Guayaquil, Ecuador, Jun 18 (efe-epa).- Liga de Quito remains in first place and on track to win the first stage of the Ecuadorian league tournament following the action over the weekend.

    Liga de Quito, which edged Tecnico Universitario 1-0 on Friday, is in first place, with 41 points.

    Barcelona is in second place, with 35 points, after playing to a 2-2 tie with El Nacional on Sunday.

    Defending champion Emelec sank into fourth place, with 30 points, following its loss to Universidad Catolica.

    Universidad Catolica edged Emelec 3-2 on Sunday, thanks to a goal by Andres Lopez.

    John Jairo Cifuente, the Ecuadorian league's leading scorer, nailed two goals for Universidad Catolica, bringing his total to 20 for the tournament.

    Aucas's Edson Montaño is No. 2 on the scoring list, with 11 goals.

    Three players - Barcelona's Juan Dinenno, Emelec's Brian Angulo and Liga de Quito's Hernan Barcos - are tied for third place at nine goals each.

    On Monday, Independiente del Valle, which is in 9th place in the 12-club league, will play 11th-place Deportivo Cuenca.
