Torreon, Mexico, May 17 (efe-epa).- Mexican national team midfielder Andres Guardado underwent successful surgery on his right leg and will be fit for this summer's World Cup in Russia, the physicians overseeing his recovery in this northern city said.

The surgery was necessary to correct a peroneal nerve injury that was also affecting his sciatic nerve.

The team headed by Dr. Jorge Clifton on Wednesday performed a surgical scrub and decompression of the entrapped peroneal nerve, the Mexican soccer federation said in a statement.

Two members of the national team's medical area who accompanied Guardado - Mexico's captain and most-capped player - said the operation was successful and that they expected him to make a rapid recovery, the statement added.

The 31-year-old Guardado has been a key figure for El Tri since first being called up to the national squad in December 2005, having played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Currently a member of Spanish-league club Real Betis, Guardado has also played during his career for La Liga sides Deportivo La Coruña and Valencia, Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.

Positive news about Guardado's health will be a relief for head coach Juan Carlos Osorio and fans of the national squad, five of whose players - defenders Diego Reyes, Nestor Araujo and Hector Moreno and midfielders Giovani dos Santos and Jonathan Dos Santos - also are trying to work their way back from injuries.

The national squad, which is currently training for the World Cup in Mexico City, will play a friendly against Wales on May 28 and two more against Scotland and Denmark on June 2 and June 9, respectively.

Mexico has been drawn into Group F of the World Cup along with Germany, South Korea and Sweden.
