Junior tops Alianza Lima 1-0 in Copa Libertadores action

Barranquilla, Colombia, Apr 27 (efe-epa).- Colombian club Junior edged Peru's Alianza Lima 1-0 on a goal by Luis Carlos Ruiz in Matchday 4 action in Group H of Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club soccer competition.

Barranquilla, Colombia, Apr 27 (efe-epa).- Colombian club Junior edged Peru's Alianza Lima 1-0 on a goal by Luis Carlos Ruiz in Matchday 4 action in Group H of Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club soccer competition.

Junior controlled possession from the outset of Thursday night's game at Metropolitan Stadium in this northern city and mounted attacks down the right side that were spearheaded by Marlon Piedrahita, Yimmi Chara and Sebastian Hernandez.

The Barranquilla team remained in charge in the second half, as the visitors seemed to be resigned to look for chances on the counter-attack.

The home side got a boost when Teofilo Gutierrez, who had played a Colombian-league game against Atletico Nacional the night before, came on as a substitute for Hernandez in the 59th minute.

Just 60 seconds later, "Teo" instigated a play that Ruiz finished off after receiving a pass in the area from Chara.

Ruiz had received the ball in traffic but maneuvered around Alianza Lima defender Miguel Araujo and scored the goal past net minder Angelo Campos.

Junior then had chances to increase its advantage, but Campos did not allow any other shots past him.

With the win, the Barranquilla side (six points) has leapfrogged Argentina's Boca Junior into second place in Group H with two matchdays remaining.

Brazil's Palmeiras has a comfortable lead in the group with 10 points and has already booked a berth in the tournament's knockout stage, while Boca has five and Alianza Lima just one.

Next week, Junior will host Boca in Barranquilla and Palmeiras will travel to the Peruvian capital to take on Alianza Lima.

The top two teams in each of the eight Copa Libertadores groups advance to the tournament's round of 16.
