United Nations, Apr 16 (efe-epa).- Bolivian President Evo Morales on Monday called on indigenous peoples around the world to mobilize in the struggle against capitalism and efforts to protect Mother Earth.

"It is our duty to fight against imperialism, capitalism, interventionism and militarism," Morales said at the opening session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

"Policies intended to accumulate capital in a few hands do not respect Mother Earth," Bolivia's first indigenous head of state said.

Morales emphasized the relevance of indigenous peoples' movements in the promotion of a lifestyle in harmony with nature, as well as the need to work to gain political power in more places.

The president noted the progress made by his administration in Bolivia and urged more countries to join in the journey.

"When we do not submit to foreign powers, which in political terms is now US imperialism, when we do not submit economically to either the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund, we are better off economically, democratically and culturally," Morales said.
