Guadalajara, Mexico, Apr 16 (efe-epa).- The mayor of Jilotlan de los Dolores, a city in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, was gunned down over the weekend, officials said.

Juan Carlos Andrade's body was found by municipal police on Sunday, the Jalisco Attorney General's Office said.

Police "were notified of the discovery of a dead person in an automobile between kilometer 9 and 10 of the Tepalcatepec-Jilotlan highway," the AG's office said in a statement.

Officers confirmed that the body was that of Andrade, a member of the Citizens Movement (MC) party, and informed state prosecutors.

The Mexico al Frente Coalition, whose members include the conservative National Action Party (PAN), leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and MC, condemned the murder of one of its candidates.

The coalition said Jalisco Gov. Aristoteles Sandoval had failed to deal with "the worst security crisis" in the state's history.

The Jalisco state government's secretary-general, Roberto Lopez, expressed his sadness over the death of Andrade, who was on leave as mayor to campaign for re-election.

Andrade was returning from a funeral when he was attacked on the Jilotlan-Tepalcaltepec highway, media reports said.

At least 80 politicians have been murdered in Mexico since Sept. 8, when campaigning started for this year's general elections.

On July 1, some 89 million voters will be eligible to cast ballots for a new president and candidates for some 3,400 other posts in 30 of Mexico's 32 states.
