Veracruz moves closer to relegation with loss to Leon

Veracruz, Mexico, Apr 16 (efe-epa).- Leon pulled off a 2-1 win over Veracruz, which needed three points badly to avoid relegation when the Mexican league's 2018 Clausura tournament ends.

Coach Gustavo Diaz's Leon squad, which has 18 points, managed to move out of last place and into 18th place in the standings, thanks to Sunday's victory.

Argentine Mauro Boselli and Colombian Andres Andrade scored goals for Leon, which had lost four straight heading into the match at Veracruz's Luis "Pirata" Fuente Stadium.

Argentine Cristian Menendez tied the match at 1-1 for Veracruz on a header in the 62nd minute, but Andrade scored the go-ahead goal for Leon in the 81st minute.

Veracruz, coached by Guillermo Vazquez, saw its three-match winning streak end and the struggle to stay in the First Division get harder.

With just two weeks of play left in the tournament, Veracruz is trying to pile up more points than the Lobos BUAP to avoid relegation to the Second Division.

A loss by the Lobos BUAP against Monterrey next week would end the team's chances of staying in the First Division, but Veracruz is still in the danger zone.
