Mexico City, Mar 13 (efe-epa).- The coveted American Dream shared by Mexican migrants has become a nightmare with Donald Trump in the White House, Mexican historian Enrique Krauze said in an interview with EFE.

He described the current situation of migrants in the United States as "intolerable" and said that the Mexican government should have defended its citizens "much more strongly," while hoping the next government "will face this situation with an enormous resolve."

"The drama of Mexican migrants living in the United States, whose situation throughout history has been difficult, dramatic and tragic, is now in its most distressing moment," Krauze said.

"Every day, millions of people live in fear of being deported and they now have an enemy of Mexico and of Mexicans living in the White House, a racist and a fascist," the historian said, referring to Trump.

For Mexican migrants, according to Krauze, "the American Dream has become an American nightmare because they cannot go back to Mexico. If they did, they know that they would never be able to return to the United States."

Trump's attacks against Mexico and Mexicans have continued since his inauguration, reiterating accusations that Mexicans are responsible for acts of violence, crime and drug trafficking and insisting that a border wall with Mexico should be build.
