Los Angeles, Dec 17 (efe-epa).- Mexican actress Kate del Castillo pokes fun at herself and the controversy over her meeting with Sinaloa drug cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" (Shorty) Guzman in her new stage show "I'M OKATE!"

Del Castillo opened the show on Saturday night at the Fox Theatre in Riverside, California.

"I'M OKATE!" is an "intimate show" in which the actress and her co-stars, Shaula Vega and Roxana Castellanos, provide fans with a take on her life, director Bruno Bichir told EFE.

"She talks about her fears, immigrating (to the US) in pursuit of her dream of being an actress and her life after taking the risk, along with actor Sean Penn, of going to talk with El Chapo," Bichir said.

The 45-year-old actress "has a good time laughing at her life with her friends" during the 90-minute Spanish-language show, Bichir said.

Del Castillo, who rose to stardom in soap operas, found herself mired in controversy after Rolling Stone magazine published Penn's article about his secret meeting with Guzman in northwestern Mexico in October 2015.

The actress said she used her one-on-one meeting with the drug lord on Oct. 2, 2015, to tell him that a film she planned to make would serve to make amends to the victims of organized crime.

The Sinaloa cartel boss became interested in meeting the actress, who is famous for playing a drug trafficker in the 2011 Spanish-language telenovela "La Reina del Sur" (Queen of the South), after she posted a message on Twitter to him.

El Chapo was captured in Los Mochis, a city in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa, in January 2016 and extradited to the US on Jan. 19.
