Disputed lands in Colombia's conflict areas will have titles in 6 years

Bogota, Jul 17 (efe-epa).- Farmland in regions of Colombia affected for decades by the internal armed conflict will be assigned titles within six years, the high comissioner for post-conflict affairs, Rafael Pardo, said Monday.

The multi-purpose land registration process seeks to benefit areas where land ownership is not guaranteed by a title, Pardo told Radio Caracol.

Title registration requires detailed information about boundaries to protect real estate property rights, a process that will strengthen tax collection, territorial order and social and economic planning, the government said.

The title registration process will be implemented this year in 200 municipalities, Pardo said.

Colombia has some 4.1 million farms, but only 21 percent of them have clear titles, National Planning Department (DNP) director Simon Gaviria said.
