Guatemala City, Jun 19 (efe-epa).- Seven people have died during the rainy season in Guatemala, the national emergency management office said Monday.

One person is listed as missing, 19 others have been injured and the rains have affected more than 50,000 people, emergency management officials said without providing details on the locations of the fatalities.

Over the weekend, two children drowned when they were swept away by a raging river in Chinautla, a city in northern Guatemala, the fire department said.

Officials have opened 332 shelters across the Central American country to house people affected by the rains.

The rains have caused slight damage to 561 dwellings, moderate damage to 132 and completely destroyed two others.

Since the rainy season started in May, 16 highways and eight bridges have sustained damage, and three bridges have collapsed.

The weather service said Monday that the rains would continue over the next few hours in Guatemala, a country that the UN has identified as vulnerable to climate change.
