Washington DC, May 19 (efe-epa).- The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has identified a current White House official close to the president as a "significant person of interest" in its Russia probe, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Speaking to the newspaper, people familiar with the matter did not identify the official, but described him as a senior White House advisor, who is "close to the president".

The sources also said investigators remain interested in people who wielded influence in Donald Trump's election campaign and administration but are no longer part of it, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Flynn resigned in February after disclosures that he had lied about his contacts with the Russian ambassador in Washington.

In a separate report Friday, sources told CNN that Russian officials bragged in intercepted conversations during the presidential campaign that they had cultivated a strong relationship with Flynn and that, through him, Russia could have influence over Trump and the White House.
