Mexico City, Dec 30 (EFE).- Eleven people were killed and nine others suffered injuries when a passenger bus veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a freight truck in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, authorities said.

The bus left from Pijijiapan in the southeastern state of Chiapas bound for Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, while the truck was traveling toward the southeast from that border city to Monterrey, according to the Federal Police commander in Juarez, Teofilo Gutierrez.

"Both drivers and nine passengers died," he said. "Nine other passengers were injured."

Gutierrez told media outlets that the vehicles collided around 4:50 am Thursday on a stretch of highway between Gomez Palacio and Jimenez.

The Federal Communications and Transportation Secretariat said that the bus operator had the necessary permits and insurance for the trip.

The injured travelers, some of them with head trauma, were taken to hospitals in Chihuahua city, Parral and Ciudad Juarez.
