Geneva, Dec 8 (EFE).- The United Nations Agency for Refugees, or UNHCR, and the International Organization for Migration, or IOM, announced on Tuesday that the number of refugees to reach Europe through the Mediterranean this year will be one million.

The IOM estimates that so far this year 909,000 refugees and migrants have entered Europe by sea, representing four times the figure for 2014, when the registered number was 219,000 people.

Melissa Fleming, the UNHCR spokeswoman, said that the record number of one million refugees will be reached "without any doubt" in 2015.

Joel Millman, IOM spokesman, said that on Monday 5,000 people reached European shores despite bad weather conditions and with three weeks left this year, he is convinced that the milestone will be reached.

In the same period, at least 3,601 people perished during their attempt to reach Europe.
